A business based on feminine principles
is a business run from the heart

When we decided to build a business around the BellyHug, we also decided to run it on feminine principles. We wanted to add what we had sorely missed when working in the corporate world, that mainly adheres to masculine values and principles. We made a commitment to keep investigating what this means to us, and what it can offer to our customers and how it can care for our planet.

We let the business grow organically, rather than driving it for profit as a main goal. We feel like BellyHug has its own life force and purpose, and that we have been given the gift of nurturing and caring for it, not unlike pregnancy and parenting.

When we speak about feminine principles we include:

  • listening to and following our heart
  • staying open to new and unknown ways of living and doing business
  • being playful
  • having a sense of wonder
  • staying rooted in the wisdom of the body
  • staying connected to Mother Earth
  • honoring the Seventh generation
  • trusting our intuitive hearts first and our minds second
  • honoring each person's unique creative expressions
  • being gifts to each other
  • being gifts to the world
  • always creating win-win
  • maintaining a balance with nature in giving-and-receiving

Inspiration from other sources

We are continously looking to be inspired by other women that we feel run their businesses on similar principles or offer insights in how to do just that.

We want to mention a few in our near vicinity that has greatly impacted and supported us so far:

Susanna Nova Tornlind and Mira Malin Sgogsdotter, Tempel for Spirited Living http://temple.ma

Another great inspiration is the work of Helen E. Fisher,
Ph.D. Research professor, Center for Human Evolutionary Studies at Rutgers University http://helenfisher.com One of the chapters in the book: Enlightened Power - How Women Are Transforming The Practice Of Leadership is written by her. Here she explains how women's "web thinking", intuition, mental flexibility, long-term planning, creativity, imagination and verbal and social skills - as well as their different views of power - create undeniable win-win strategies in business. Download chapter: http://www.helenfisher.com/downloads/articles/07leadership.pdf
The last paragraph of the chapter reads:

"Albert Einstein once said, “The significant problems we face today cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them.” Women bring a different way of thinking; a cooperative spirit; a gift for “reading” people; patience; empathy; networking abilities; negotiating skills; a drive to nurture children, kin, business connections and the local and world community; an interest in ethnic diversity and education; a keen imagination; a win-win attitude; mental flexibility; an ability to embrace ambiguity; and the predisposition to examine complex social, environmental, and political issues with a broad, contextual, long-term view. As the female mind becomes unleashed on our modern world, societies will benefit — even in lands where it is currently shackled."

Ernst & Young released a report during the World Economic Forum 2009 called Strength Of Women Can Rebuild The Global Economy. It highlights the significant and proven contributions women make toward business and economic growth: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/02/27/strength-og-women-can-reb_n_170564.html
